Has the legacy of bad eating habits during lockdown left you suffering from ‘sugar face?’

woman holding donutI know I am not the only one who found themselves reaching for the chocolate, cakes and wine on a more regular basis during the prolonged period of corona confinement…life suddenly became so mundane and predictable that a mid-afternoon ‘treat’ or a cheeky glass of wine (or two) seemed the least we deserved after yet another day of staring at the same four walls.

Unfortunately, sugar is terrifyingly addictive, and whilst we know it wreaks havoc on our bodies, what is less well documented is the detrimental effect it can have on our faces…

donutsSugar breaks down the Collagen in our skin. Collagen is the natural ‘plumping’ agent which gives us that youthful glow. As we age, this begins to breakdown at an ever increasing rate, and therefore, we certainly don’t need any help from sugar in depleting our Collagen further! Interestingly, sugar also weakens our immune system which means the skin is less able to fight off bacteria, leading to clogged pores, and that’s not to mention that it also causes inflammation- a perfect storm for our skin!

Fortunately, the effects of ‘sugar face’ can be reversed fairly quickly, according to Dr. Lancer, a dermatologist who treats the Hollywood elite. He believes that the effects completely cutting out sugar can be seen within a couple of days, which is great news for those of us who have become slaves to the biscuit tin of late. I personally tend to find I have to go ‘cold turkey’ on sugar for approximately three weeks to break the addiction…it’s going to be a tough few weeks ahead!
